Day 8-9

For the past two weeks I think i have been doing very well in intersession. Like I've been doing work, and participating welly enough to get my work done. For the first week I learned about carpentry in general, like the terms, safety, and usage of the tools, and to mathematics. For the seconded week, I have gotten into my group (corn hole group) and me crew and we did plans for our corn hole board, and measuring and mathematics. When we were done with the mathematics, and measuring we started to cut our wood. Throughout the whole second week we just were working on our project/constructing it and painting it. I didn't really like working out in the hot sun all day, it made me overwhelmed and made me exhausted. But I liked working on our projects that we have made, and it has given me a lot of confidence and pride".  I feel good that we have worked on these because it has an affect on our whole community, and we expanded the play space of our school. Some of the time I would pretty much fool around while taking breaks, like talking to my Friends. I'm happy that I have joined this intersession because it shows me pride in what I have Incorporated in. I'm also pretty amazed that it was my first time in my life that  have used an Mitre saw, which changed my life and I also seen people use them but it doesn't look easy as it looks. I have changed throughout intersession, because like on the first day or two I made drum noises on the table and was talking to friends some of the time. But after that, I found more interest in getting work done because I wanted pride to be given. I then started to work with my group. I'm very exited I have joined this intersession, I'm very sad to leave it though  :[  I had allot of fun learning carpentry  and having more interest in math because it is used in carpentry which is allot of fun in making. After that said I'm going to miss intersession, and have pride/confidence in what I have done to help our HTH community.

Day 7

1. If you had 27 2x4" pieces of  wood, what is the total width and height?

The total width of the 27 2x4's is 108 wide, becuase you know that in a 2x4 peice of wood the width is 4 so then you multiply it by 27 since that is your main number. The height of the 2x4's is 54 in tall, becuase you would multiply the height of a 2x4, which is 2 so then you multiply it by 27 which is the magic number and gets your answer.

2. What was the biggest challenge you faced today while you were working? ( What steps did you take to defeat your challenge?)

The challenge today that I have faced was to come up whith an ideia, to add value to our design. Like what to add to make it not that bland and not that junky, so I first told our assistant instructor Mr. Anothony what we sould do. I soon came up whith an ideia of using the girl bathroomm symbol on our board, instead of a stick figure. So then me and my group gathered up and found our image on google images and worked off there.

3. What is your work plan for tomorrow? (Be very detailed!)

My work plan for tomorrow would be, retracing our "girl" design and painting the outline of it on our board. We are I'm also going to paint/filling out the inside of our "girl design", and I'm going to add more value of color to it as well. I'm also going to sew different color cloths, for the beanbags. Colors representing the arrival teams.

Day 6

1. What were some problems you faced today? how did you overcome them?

the problems was deciding on what our design should be, communicating with our group and not sharing our ideas and thoughts. And not liking what my group members design was. How I overcame all these was, that we finally asked our teacher any recommendations of what we should do. And instead of having a bland/basic panting my group and I filled it in with colors and added more value.

2. Explain your favorite part of today?

My favorite part today was, just painting our cornhole design and addng touch ups and painting our baord. I also liked helping working on the Gaga pit, just doing extra work to help finish, like moving wood, etc..

Day 4

1. Explain one challenge you faced, and how you overcame it this week?

The challenge that I have faced would be, having our measurements slightly off. And when nailing the wood, we didn't hold down the wood that much so then the nail came out throughout the side of the wood and we had to yank the nails out a couple of times. How i have came over the challenges was that i told one of the instructors to help and  we got a chance to redo the measurements and we trimmed down the wood that had our measurements on it that were incorrect. Overcoming the nail challenge, we hammered out the nail reverse. Matched the wood correctly, evened it out and re nailed.

2. What accomplishments are you proud of from this past week? why are you proud of them?

Accomplishments that I'm proud of that happened throughout the past week, happens to be actually making the corn hole board, and going through the process very fast, which we are likely almost done with our project. I'm also proud In using different tools i never used in my life. And helping my group out/working, in having pride in building the corn hole board. I'm proud of all these accomplishments because I now I'm confident in what I'm building, and what I'm doing for our whole HTMMA community.

3. What is the next step in your process to completing your project? how will you get there?

What we have to do where we left off was, that we have to finish our design in pencil on our corn hole board, and we are hopefully going to get our paint from home depot and paint our design. How my group and me get there, is trying our hardest of all and not talking/concentrating. Another way is to just avoid talking to our friends, and our group as a team can decide more quick and faster so we can get to our next step.

Day 3

Reflection:

I think this intersession has been going good so far. I leanred more about Mathematics, angles and geometry. I also learned about safety of tools, of when to use them and when not to. The tools that we have covered so far in this intersession were hand saws/saws, lumber, wood, and mitre saws. I knew how to use a handsaw but I never knew they way to use it and I never knew the difference between a Japanese saw, and an American saw. I learned also to use the different tools I never worked with. On the first day we had Larry Rosenstock talk to us about safety of the tools and different carpentry terms. On the first day I think I did a good job, like I was talking to my friends sometimes and I would make drum beats on the table. Over the last 3 days I kind of developed working and paying more attention/ being more interested in carpentry. On the seconded day we learned how to cut wood, and measure. Third day we had Will Spencer talk about safety of mitre saws, and as today we used them, which were really fun, and amazing since I never used one. Over all I like carpentry, using tools, and learning mathematics and basic carpentry safety and also having pride in building what we put hard work in.

Day 2

1. When measuring your lumber this morning, what came up and what did you notice that may make cutting difficult in the future?

We measured  two 2x4's and of plywood,  and four 2x4x8's. When we measured we found out there where different measurements and dimensions. When we measured the length, width and height of the  same lumber the measurements were different. Like an example would be that we measured 2'x4' plywood and for the length we got 4 ft and 2/16", width was 1 15/10" and for the height we got 7/16".

2. If you had to teach someone how to use a hand saw, what would you say? be specific for safety reasons.

You first have to make sure you cut outwards, and you have to be around an enviorment where people aren't around to get hurt. You also never put your hand were you are cutting, because most of the time people get there back of their hand cut. To use a hand saw, you push your saw backwards on your line you drew. After push back a couple times, you then push the saw forward and back. You also kind of tilt down while you are cutting on the angle.

3. What is the magic number we repeated 10 times and why is it important to remember?
The magic number was 67.5 degrees which we repeated 54983534534 times. why it is important to remember this number is because, we are going to be building a Ga Ga pit which is an octagon, and each corner is going to be 135 degrees for each angle. And if you cut that number in half you get 6.75 DEGREES!!!

Day 1

1. What is the difference between a section view and a plan view?

section view is the side view, and the plan view is a view from a birds eye. The plan and section view are used in drawing diagrams.

2. What was your safety skit about?

In class we did a safety skit about tools and how to use them properly and not to do with them. Our safety skit was about nail guns, how they are really easy to hurt/kill someone, and not to mess around while your playing with them. In our skit we had someone working with the tool, and then they started to mess around and play rough. They then weren't concentrating so then they shot one of there friends accidentally. Towards the end I told the audience what not to do, and how it affects them, and what you do to prevent it.

3. What is the difference between a saw in Japan, and a saw in America?

In Japan, the saw blades are shaped to cut backwards, back to front. The saws in America have there blades that are specially designed and shaped to cut forward and back. (vise versa)

4. What does "measure twice, cut once" mean, and why is it important to follow that saying?

Measure twice, cut once means to be sure of what you are doing. If you measure once and cut, and you mess up you wasted an expensive amount of wood. If you measure twice and cut, you are given a second chance to be sure you measured right. It is important to follow the saying because you can be sure if you want to cut the wood the right way.
